Times: Friday, January 14, 1887, Issue 31969 – The Pongola, steamer, from Natal for London, calling for a pilot, went ashore at 10 o’clock on Wednesday, during a thick for, off Greenhills, Weymouth, on a sandbank. Lloyd’s Agent went on board. An agreement was made with tugs to tow the vessel off for £500, which was done with the assistance of the ship’s anchors. Her engines are reported to have sanded; the vessel is otherwise uninjured. She is now anchored in Portland Roads. A survey will be held and the steamer will proceed to London. Ship Incident
