built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Newport News in 1913 and owned at the time of her loss by The Texas Company, New York, was an American tanker of 5225 tons. On March 18th, 1917, Illinois, on a voyage from London to Port Arthur in ballast, was scuttled by the German submarine UC-21 (Reinhold Saltzwedel), 20 miles north from Alderney. There were no casualties.
